Can Collareds do damage when they bite?......more

kofseattle Jan 21, 2005 03:49 PM

Damn straight they can! You should see my finger, it is a bloody mess I entered our "reptile room" and saw one of collareds was thrashing about something fearce. Somehow she got her tail stuck in her burrow or the male "bluey" got ahold of her and wouldn't let go. She was completely freakin out! So, in my infinite wisdon I reach in to assist and BAM! She tags my finger and lays it wide open. Then she conpletely freaks because the big hairy thing from above (me) must be here for lunch right? Now she goes into speedy-gonzales mode and rips her tail right off before I can help her. I felt really bad and sore Poor little girl.

Update to the other little girl who is so sick; She is still alive but not doing well at all. I have a terrible time getting her fed. I think she has given up. I am have not and will keep trying but the prognosis does not look good

Maybe I should just stick the big lizards and leave the little'ns to you folks. Thank god it wasn't my Tegu or Argus that got ahold of my finger, I wouldn't have pulled back much more than a stump

I may be wrong, but I think that was taken in the flint hills.

yeah, that ain't sh**. My "little" girl gave me two nice big lacerations and I bled like a stuck pig! I had no idea they were that strong in the jaws She was really scared though so that probably helped.

I've been bit pretty hard but haven't lost any digits. I once cornered a male C. bicintores in the wild and he leaped at me and got me on the hand. It hurt!

The was fun grabbing him up into my hands after we both looked each other in the eyes wondering who was going to make the first move

That may be. The only agressive collared I ever owned was one.

oh my god! i have been wondering the same thing too. all of my lizards over time became relatively calm, even spastic milly stopped trying to bite me but kaiser berg is always a nervous wreck--puffing up and opening his mouth at me. he has never lunged to bit but he certainly seems to get worse with age!

Hey,
my Collared experience is exclusively with bicinctores, and I suppose we can count Leopard Lizards if we're going family. I will say I have never caught a bicinctores that didn't at least threaten to bite me. Comparing bicintores with a Leopard Lizard, though? I would say that the Leopards are 10x as mean as any bicinctores I've come across. I've had one bicinctores actually draw blood, but it wasn't hard to remove. a little water in his face and he let go. Leopards on the other hand....I have had at least Three individuals who found my finger a rather pleasing bite plate; and gave me the duel row of cuts, which proceeded to bleed profusely. I don't know about vestigium, or collaris, but I imagine getting bit by a collaris would hurt more because of the head size difference. I wouldn't want to get tagged by Kong or Jr. thats for sure.
Anyway, thought I'd share.
