an adult... this guy is hibernating at the moment and was my first ever rat snake. Coming up for 8 years old.

Last one... an 8 year old Anomala. Prettiest snake in my collection IMHO.
Hope you like them
Steve.

I started keeping schrencki in 1988, one of my first Asians. I stopped keeping them last year, after 16 yrs, because of their large size and change in direction for us. They are a very interesting snake and make great pets, especially for those in northern climates. I still miss them

Steve,
Thanks for sharing the pics again--beautiful animals! I'm hoping to add some schrencki to my collection once my climacs are established. They are my first asian rats, and I am enjoying them a great deal. I seem to be drawn to the species from colder climates.
Are your schrencki personable? An acquaintance has an adult male, and I am in love with this snake. The minute anyone walks into the herp room, he's out of his hide, intently peering out to see what's going on. He'll hang out for as long as there's a human around. If his enclosure is opened, out he comes to socialize. He's even prone to falling asleep wrapped around my arm. I'm wondering if this inquisitive & social personality is characteristic of the species!

Hi Althea,
In my opinion the Russians are one of the most personable snakes I have come accross, even more so than corns. Very placid, very relaxed and very unafraid... when cleaning out, I am happy to let him wander around the room as he doesn't scurry off anywhere. The only drawback of them is their size, expect an adult snake of 6 feet plus.
I have found though that keeping them cool is very important and mine do tend to get irritable if they are kept at much above 82F in the basking area.
The Anomala on the other hand are not personable at all... they are very shy, mainly nocturnal and a couple of mine will only eat in their hides. I have not found them to be aggressive though... just nervous. I have had my adult for 6 years now and have been bitten only once. However, once out and being handled, they do seem to calm down almost immediately and become docile and inquisitive like Russians... I certainly wouldn't let these wander around like the rssians though... lol. A very Jeckyll and Hyde snake in my opinion and a very interesting animal.
