I would say if you really don't have any idea...go to a pet store which deals a lot with reptiles and ask if they will sex it for you. If you don't have someone to show you, you might harm the little guy.

You probe it

AlteredMind99 Jan 22, 2005 07:56 AM

Unless you have a very reputable pet store nearby with a good experinced reptile person i wouldnt have them sex it because if they dont know what they are doing they could harm him too. And the process by which they would sex it ("popping" the hemipenis) is not 0 anyway. If you really want to know the sex i would take it to a vet and have them do a quick probe.

Ok thanks you for all the help. and 1 more question how long until its full grown? and how long do okeetees normaly get?

AlteredMind99 Jan 22, 2005 10:35 AM

Most corns in my experince will continue growing into their third year. It all depends on how much you feed them, but generally speaking a well fed but not power fed baby will be full grown within three years. The length is extremely variable, depending on sex and the indivudal. they can max out at anywhere from 3-6ft. Although mnost specimens stay in the middle of that range

I am in no means telling you to pop your baby, but it really isnt that hard. If you have a vet or experienced snake owner you can go to do it. Let them show you how and soon you will be able to do it yourself. It took me a long time to get up the courage to try it, but once I did it i found out how easy it is. At one point or another all you guys are going to want to check the sex before you buy, you never learn if you dont ever try.

I agree that its not that hard once you learn how to do it. The problem is that although it may be simple, if you mess up you can break your corns back. So its much better to be safe than sorry and have someone who really knows how do it. I agree that you can also have them show you, and it is not too hard to learn how.

Its not something a beginner should try to do. After seeing it done several times, I figured it looked easy. I took a couple that I knew were males and started experimenting when I would have them out. After several attempts over a few weeks I had one of the boys out a pop there they were. Once you figure out how much pressure to apply it becomes pretty simple. But your right, "children dont try this at home". But also if you plan on breeding your gonna have to learn sooner or later.

yeah im not going to try it myself im going to have to save up and have a vet do it fir me.

AlteredMind99 Jan 22, 2005 01:23 PM

give your vet a call, if you say you just want to stop in to have your snake probed really quickly they might not even charge you for it.
