his first trip out of his cage AND outside!

compasscreek Jul 05, 2003 01:08 PM

once a day for the past week i've tried to get outr chameleon out of the cage but he aways goes to his hiding spot or to the middle and top of his enclosure. i stop after just one time to minimize the stress on the little guy, figuring when it is time it will happen. well this morning i got him out!

did got him out using the "cupping method" and let him climb across my hands and then onto my shirt where he jumped off onto the ground. i picked him back up and hollerd for my wife so i could have an extra set of eyes and hands and then told my wife i wanted to take him outside for a few minutes. i took him outside and placed him on a ficus(the first one i had bought and used to set up his enclosure)i had to nurse back to healthdo to shock. our chamelon seemed to calm down after climbing onto the ficus. then i put the plant on a large ice chest i use for work in partial sun.. he climb out onto one of the branches and just sat there swaying in the breeze. i used a spray bottle and misted the plant down some, he didn't like that much. he fired up just nicely outside at first, even puffing up a bit then settled down still showing color(as much as a 3 month old will show). the whole "field trip" for him only lasted 10 minutes...i wish i had my camera!! i'll try again tommarrow morning.

Dennis-

You should have a cage for him setup outside so he can be out there longer. All my panthers love being outdoors, they are more active and colorful in the sun! Sounds like you are enjoying your new pal. Hope this helps!

That is SO exciting! I can appreciate your joy. At least you didn't get the sauce bitten out of you like the first time I took Ichabob outside. Don't you love it when they get all puffed up, expand their throats and threaten you? I don't try to handle Icky all that much but when I have to he makes the experience very "enjoyable". I am so happy that it was a great experience for you.

what is a chameleon bite comparible to? how long do they hang on? is it more like a "bite and flight"?

Hi, Dennis! Just one quick crunch and instant release...at least that was my experience. However, Icky was trying to flee from my hand so I grabbed him and that's when he bit me. I just terrified him....my fault - now I know better. It didn't really hurt, just startled me. I chalked it up to a learning experience - never grab a fleeing cham, just do the hand cup thing.
