~Sterilizing long branches~

lil_frogger2 Jul 05, 2003 01:31 PM

I have collected some long branches for my chameleon around a little creek area. I know there are a lot of little bugs inside, so how do I sterilize it? They are really long, so they wont fit in a pot or anything. I've heard about dipping, but how do you dip the middle? I know I could buy driftwood, but it is so expensive. Does anyone know where I could buy driftwood for cheaper? And there was one more thing, there is tons of driftwood down on the beaches aroud here, I might collect from there. But I still have to sterilize them...will the salt hurt them? And if it does, how do you get completely get rid of it? Now that this has turned into a book....thanks in advance if you decide to help.

Julie-

You can bake the wood in the oven on a low temp where the wood wont smoke for 30min. Drift wood from the ocean can be used, if small boil it. For large piece that wont fit in the over or pot, you can place them in a trash can full of water and place it in a sunny area for a few days with a little bleach, then rise with house, place back in the trash can with just water and some kind of de-clor (used to remove chlorine out of water for fish tanks) I use the same process when bleaching coral. Hope this helps.

Note:

There should also be allot of live plants in the cage along with the braches/drift wood for perches in the top of the cage!

Thanks, I'll get right on that. Yeah, I bought plants from black jungle. I'm using a lot of live plants, and those flexable vines for higher up. I'm thinking about using that bead-a-beast dirt, and I want to get a dish, or something with steep edges to put food in.
