Sexing Paradigm?

RaverTanker Jan 22, 2005 12:14 PM

OKAY, a couple questions here. Was wondering if anyone knew some surefire ways of sexing green anoles. I bought a couple in bulk and I need to get rid of all but one male. Also, there's so much conflicting views on lighting. I've heard they need a ceramic heat emmitter for night time. Is this true and also what is a good daytime light(s)? Any info would be great, thanks!

The only sure way is to have them probed at a vet. However, there are a couple of "almost 100%" characteristics. Look for paired hemipenile bulges at the base of the tail (Male). Also there should be paired enlarged scales behind the anal region (Postanal scales). If the Anole has one, or better yet, both of these characteristics it is definitely a male.

You wouldn't need a heat emitter unless the temperature in the room they are kept in gets cold at night. My house drops to about 65F at night, so I don't use any supplemental night heat. Daytime I have a Reptisun 5.0 over the length of the cage and just a household bulb in a dome lamp for basking heat.
