New to snakes. I'm getting scared. Please help.

I have owned many reptiles over the years(about twenty types) and i have never seen anything like this. My newly purchased albino burm has what I would assume to be mites. Little black dots crawling on him a few are imbedded. I'm in need of help. Thanks in advance.

Sounds like mites. Provent-a-mite works well. Just follow the instructions on the can.

The only store that sells any reptile supplies within 45mins of my house is a petco. I went there and the guy told me to use a mite and lice killer made for birds. He told me thats what their reptile guy recoomends. Do you think it would be safe?

I am willing to bet that it contains pyrethrins. If so then you should not use it as it is too toxic to reptiles. Where do you live? Also, getting rid of ites is a pain but it can wait until a day or so if you have a can shipped to you. You can also bath the snake and offer a water tub for them to submerge. Drowning will kill mites but you still need to worry about eggs. The snake will likely stay inder water and kill many of them off. They dont want them either.

I have never seen pet stores carrying Provent-a-mite. Order it online http://www.pro-products.com/miteandtemp.html
In the meantime while youre waiting for it to get shipped, clean off whatever you can on the snake and in the cage. Use a lubricated q-tip and try to get those little suckers from under the scales of your burm. When you get the product be sure to follow directions on the can. Good luck.
