Cresteds & lighting

Elwood54 Jan 22, 2005 01:21 PM

I need to know a little bit about lighting. I'm trying to get a blue or red light for the night for my 10g tank. The thing is, I have no idea where to mount it.

The top of the tank is plastic (like a Kritter Keeper) and that is usually where the lamp would be placed. I'm not apt to go out and buy a glass tank with a mesh top. Anyone have any suggestions?

If it will provide enough heat you can just use an UTH, depending on how warm it is in the room where your crestie is

And what does UTH mean?

Even the mildest UTH's get to 100 degrees...much too warm for Crested Geckos.

There are thermostats that you can connect UTHs to in order to decrease the heat output, but without a thermostat to shut off the pad before it gets to 100 degrees it is irresponsible to use them with cresteds.

What are the day and night time temps of your house? usually room temps are good for cresteds and no additional heat is needed. My tanks are usually between 68-78 during the day, and 62-70 at night (room temp.). If the temps are a little lower then that would be fine, but do not let them go above 80 especially for a long period of time.

The temps are fine. 65-70 at night, 70-75 during the day. It's not the temps I'm focusing on, I need the light to be able to watch the little guy at night.

With a plastic top, you're not going to be able to get away with much heat. The only suggestion I would have for you is to try a fluorescent blacklight and make sure that the plastic doesn't get soft from the heat.

If I were you, I'd get a regular screen top and put a dome light with a 15 watt night bulb overhead.

I was thinking about just the screen top itself, but not a totally new enclosure. Is there any special place they make custom screen tops?
