New Borneo Rack System, DONE!! **D/U warning**

jordanm Jan 22, 2005 03:30 PM

Woot, so I finally finished my new rack system for my juvie Borneos last weekend, and its working AWESOME! Seats six comfortably in 26x16x7" Steralites. I used 11" flexwatt heat tape on the back and then 3" the bottom/side of each level going down 3/4 of the way. The tape is running off a Helix DBS 1000 set at 90 degrees with the probe in the back right corner just above the heat tape, and the opposing corner has been a steady 82 degrees. Humidity seems to be out of whack even with water bowls and humid hides in each cage, but my monitor is showing it as lower than the outside humidity in GA so I think its time for a new humidity monitor. Just wanted to share kids new home with you guys... heres uhmm more pics than you wanted to see

Just finished

Loaded up and ready to go

Individual Cage Set UP

One of the happy campers (atleast she better be!) in shed as well

Oh and thanks to Ethan, and Angel for some much needed advice on this!

Looks great! Very professional looking. How long did it take you to construct?

Hey, when do we get more pictures of the happy campers?

Thanks Carole! I spent about a week getting materials and putting it together. But if I only had to make one trip to Home Depot and didn't have to work, I probably could have done it in a weekend. I'll try to get some more pics of the kids later like six out of seven went into shed this week... which is really weird!

Hey J,
Very nice job with the rack system. What did you use to cover the edge of the rack. And, did you make it using the melamine that I use. Oh! that Borneo, is outstanding. Good work!

Thanks bro, it's just the melamie without the coating, fiber board or whatever you call it. Last time I used melamie and it cracked like #$@# when I was getting it cut, so I opted to save some money and just cover it with contact paper. The edges have edge banding and then I got some white duct tape and put it on top of the edges because the contact paper was already starting to peel back a bit. Seems to be working perfect, but we'll see how it holds up in a few years.

Hey J,
Nicely done. When I make a rack system, the only thing that I put contact paper on is, the ceiling of the rack and no where else. It seems to work fine that way, as the humidity builds up on the ceiling only. Otherwise, great job and thanks for posting the pictures and the kudos. Hope all is well.

Nice job.So are you ready to build another one.I know I didn't want to.Keeps everything all nice and tight instead of scattered around.I still go out and get all tickled about the set up and how convinient it is.Those guys are going to grow out of that set up quick though.Maybe a year or so.By then rubbermaid will probably come out with a bigger container to fit the needs of an adult snakes.Hey is your heat tape covered up something?Well back to work I go, thanks for sharing.Later, Ethan

fishkiller Jan 24, 2005 02:07 PM

Hey isn't that duct tape on top of your heat tape.I don't know if that might me safe or not.I think you would want it to have somewhat of a ventalation so it doesn't over heat.Maybe the tape has enough ventation for heat distrubution through it not causing any overheating problems in the tape.I'll try to send a picture of what happens when not vented properly that I've come across and had scared me what can happen to heat tape.

jordanm Jan 24, 2005 06:21 PM

Yes it is Ethan. The instructions I recieved with it said to insulate the entire piece of heat tape. I guess I will check into this and maybee call the supplier. All that I would need to do is remove a single piece of tape on each level but now I duno if its supposed to be there or not?!?!
