Thinking about getting a pair of U. satanics

sunfox Jan 22, 2005 07:43 PM

I've read a few caresheets on these guys and they sound pretty cool. I just have a few quick questions before I decide to buy them:

1. Do they need UV light?
2. Are mealworms or waxworms an acceptable substitute for crickets?
3. What kind of basking light will they require?
4. Do tails grow back and if so, do they need to be fed more often because of the lack of a tail (ie. fat storage)?
5. Would keeping a water bowl in the tank be beneficial?

Can you please post pics of some of your enclosures so I can get a good idea of how to set mine up.

That's all for now
Thanks guys

I currently keep a sexed pair of mali uromastyx

heres a couple of your questions answered. But by the way GREAT looking mali cage, I used to keep them and they are GREAT and your look fat and happy!

1)Some people say they need UV some dont. I dont use UV and my Henkeli are just fine. But if it worries you just use it as it cant hurt them!

2)I have feed my Henkeli wax worms every now and then. Never feed meal worms. But I wouldnt give them many wax worms as they can get addicted and only want to eat them. You probabally would be better off to feed them maily crickets with wax worms, but feed wax worms to them very sparingly.

3)Im not sure what kind of basking temp they need as I dont keep them but I would think about 85 degree basking spot with a 70 degree cool side as they will go back and forth and find what temp they like!

4)Yes I do beleave that all leaf-tail geckos tails will grow back. But If you feed them as much as they will eat that would be fine. Just give them all the food that they will eat as they will tell you when there doen eating.

5)A water bowl would raise humidity but you would still need to mist there cage. Just make sure that the water bowl isnt deep enough for them to drown.

I hope that this helps! And you could probabally keep a pair in a 10 gallon cage but a 20 tall or long would be better though and also would allow you to get more if you ever wanted to! LoL thats always my problem! Hope this helps, and Good luck if you get them! Erik

when I said "Never feed meal worms" I didnt mean not to, I was just saying that I never have. Just wanted to clear that up as I have never tried to feed them meal worms! Erik

Phants can be particularly fastidious when it comes to temps. NEVER let the temp reach 80 degrees. The death will be acute, even in healthy specimens. All Uroplatus are aroboreal, therefore, will not benefit from a water dish. However, some have had success w/ their gex drinking from waterfalls, etc. Mine drink the water droplets off the leaves or the glass. Satanics also require a good amount of cover, and again, since they are arboreal this can be achieved by loading the enclosure w/ plants.

I undoubtedly second Sean… I consider a max temp for phants at 74 with drops in the mid to low 60s being fine… You might want day/night drops, seasonal fluctuations, or both... different people do an assortment of things depending on their intended purpose for keeping them... Do a lot more reading and asking questions before you buy some… They’re not “disposable” 35 dollar animals anymore…

Hey one of my uro buddies, Glad to see you here.

These are facinating animals, and like Ben, and everyone said, do alot of reading and ASK ASK ASK, many questions before you buy.

I personally have uroplatus henkeli, but many here can help with any questions you may have. They are a fantastic bunch, very knowlegeable and caring.

So again, nice to have you, your a great uro parent, so I know you will also provide great care to any future uroplatus geckos you choose to keep

Nice to see you again. I was looking at the c.b. u. phantasticus from Neil Meister. He seems like a pretty good guy and he's not too far from where I live so getting animals shipped will work out.
I've read several caresheets on these guys and everything seems pretty straightforward. The information that conflicted were the ones I asked about. I guess raising uromastyx has taught me how to read these things and what questions to ask. I am now researching more on their home in the mountains and trying to figure out how to best simulate that environment so they feel comfortable and happy.
Would one of those small waterfall and fogger units work in this kind of setup?

Thanks
