Mating season

GirlyThing10 Jan 22, 2005 08:27 PM

hey i have an iguana who is about 6 months.. he is very tiny yet. but i dont know if it is a male or a female. since my brother gave him to me he named him frank and so i have been referring to him as a male. but i dont know. anyways im nervous about him being a male since breeding season..

will he bite me in breeding season and make me go to the emergency room or anything. will he be mean. i read somewhere that a lot of iguana owners give their iguanas away due to breeding season aggressivness.

At 6 month breeding season shouldnt be a problem. How long is he ? Anyway six month is too young to be sexed.

As far as the agressivity of the breeding season, some igg are aggrssive other dont. You just have to be more careful during that period. Some owner just leave them in their enclosure. But i think that if you are careful reading thir bdy language it might not be too bad. I suggest you start reading on the subject. I know some good article on this. I will send them to you by pm.

My lil iggy is about almost a foot from head to end of tail.. his tail broke off unfortunatly. That was really scarey. but he is fine now and it is starting to grow back. But I would need to read on that subject of mating season. Everything i have read thus far says that they are mean and what not. so i am nervous..

I have a 15 yr old male ig that I've had since he was a very tiny hatchling, about 2 months old. He goes through mating season at least twice a year, and has never bitten or whipped anyone, except for a very stupid cat of mine who just wouldn't leave him alone, and even then it was just like a warning. He has free reign of the house, and hasn't had a cage since he was 2. Not all males are vicious during breeding season. Actually, mine is rather comical.
Rather than biting, he just will grasp on to things with his mouth, not letting go until he finishes his business. But he only does that to stuffed animals and any pair of jeans he finds laying on the floor. You can always tell when he's about to do that kinda thing though. He does this particular head bob as he slowly moves towards the object. A friend of mine had a very angry female ig, so it's not just the males. My ig is a big boy, but he's as gentle as a cow. He's even very good with my 2 year old daughter, probably better than my cats or dog are. But I have socialized him on a daily basis since he was a baby, and handled him as much as I can. It took a lot of work, but he's the best pet I've ever had.
