Salmon (Hypo) Distinguishing Characteristics

gooberdog Jan 22, 2005 08:57 PM

Ok folks, I'm new to the community. Have a couple of basic questions.

If you breed a DH Sunglow to a Salmon(Hypo), your possible offspring percentages are:
0.125 normal
0.125 normal het albino
0.375 salmon het albino (DH Sunglow)
0.375 salmon (hypo)

So here come my questions. (don't laugh, if I don't ask I'll never know)

First, what are the characteristics that distinguish a HYPO (SALMON) from a normal? How does a breeder, or buyer, know the difference between the normals and the salmons?

Next, I have been told that Salmons (Hypo's) go through different phases where their coloration can significantly change. Is this true or is someone pulling my leg?

Thanks in advance for your advice and assistance.

Hypo, or HypoMelanistic is a reduction in Melanin (black pigment) which gives the snake an increased red color to it. Thats how you can pick them from normals.
And yes, they do go through color phases, your not getting your leg pulled. They can go from very light to very dark, but the speckling or overall cleaness of the snake will still be obvious.
Hope that helps
