Just lost my male Halmahera Candoia

norml32 Jan 23, 2005 12:43 AM

I have had him for 3 years. Beautiful chocolate brown WC..and he suddenly died. I have done two things differently: I placed him in a roughly 20 gallon with a female I purchased from East Bay Vivarium (whom is the meaniest, most psychotic snake I own and came to me with an RI...which I treated immediately) and they have been breeding for several months, also I gave him and my other snakes PARAZAP for 7 days in their water. Now, I also lost my damn CB male green redtailed ratsnake a week before, whom I was also giving PARAZAP to and whom is an equally rare and hard to replace snake. When my male HC died, he had blood coming out his mouth...though, I had not noticed any change in behavior with him. Does anyone know, is PARAZAP dangerous for WCs or any ideas what may have happened? I froze him, which was apparently the wrong thing to do as it will kill any viruses or bacteria...though I may have a friend still attempt a necropsy(he is an expert at it). My female killed but did not eat a mouse tonight, so I am little worried, though I am fairly certain she is pregnant, due to her large girth.

thanks.

I think the main reason PARAZAP or other parasite meds would be dangerous specifically for a wc snake (as opposed to a cb) would be because the animal had a huge parasite load that the toxin killed all at once. The snake's system was then overloaded with all the dead organisms and ended up with septicemia, obstructions, or respiratory damage. The dead bugs could block blood vessels, heart, intestines or lungs. The only way you'll know is to do the necropsy...at least a gross exam could show you if there were lots of parasites.

Unfortunately we did get the answer. PARAZAP killed them both...the Candoia ulcered from it and bled to death...the other snake had a similar reaction.
Sorry for the double posts...did not mean to include in my post where I got the sick snake from...I dont blame EBV..in fact I have a very healthy Moluccan from them, I think she got cold in transport....

thanks.
