NBC News - Burmese Pythons in the Everglades

jeffb Jan 23, 2005 08:01 AM

I just saw an NBC news piece about "Python Pete" the snake dog
chasing burms in the everglades. Though the story
was about burms they used at least 1 boa and 1 ball python in the story. Bottom line they placed the blame squarely on the shoulders
of irresponsible snake owners. Not a very positive news piece.

Just thought I would give you guys a heads up.

Sadly I missed it even though I was part of it, the ball python and boa were mine.
I repeatedly told them that people buy baby snakes and by being lazy the few and far betweem irresponsible owners release theirs instead of taking to a pet shop that can help place them or a rescue group, or breeder that may take them in. It is humane societies fault for not accepting "reptiles" becuase of their fear of them. Anyways, anyone tape it?

It is a shame to have such a hit at reptiles again. It is not only people who are irresponsible but also weather problems and the massive amounts of snakes that come into florida. I am amazed burmese pythons can survive in the glades. I could see how many other pythons species and green anacondas would make it especially...but the burmese somewhat blows my mind with how well it is thriving.

There were a few safari type private little wild animal zoos in
that areas that were destroyed by hurricanes. I think that a lot
of these Burmese pythons originally came from those places.

Seriously speaking, how many python owners do you think are
going to drive all the way to the Everglades to let loose their
pet? I never see this included in any of these stories. I guess
it just isn't as interesting, as the negligent herp owner angle...
