bad aim

chamsrcool Jan 23, 2005 08:12 AM

my female hasn't always been the best with her aim but since she layed she only eats when she just happines to hit a cricket witch has happine like 2 or 3 time in the past two days. i know its not somthing to worry too much about as she is eating but is there something i can do to help her aim?....im getting silkies this week but they will be too small for her to eat.

i tried to make sure nothing was in her eye and unless she is sitting through the pain and not tring to get it out after misting and stuff, there isn't anything in there.

how about her supplement? Have you upped her calcium since she laid - had you upped it when she was gravid?? Check with your vet about getting Neo Calglucon (NCg). It is a liquid calcium supplement (as I am sure you have seen here often) and is dosed by weight so she will need to be weighed at home or at the vet. Tongue problems are often calcium related. (btw, get the unflavored - Luna hates this apple-flavored stuff he usually gives to his beardie patients.

Silkies are high in calcium but they are not a magic fix - and if they are small it will be a couple weeks before they are large enohg for her. So please check out the calcium issue so it does not get worse. Others may have other suggstions as well, but I know with Luna her tongue issues are always right after laying.

yeah i bought reptical (calcium with vit D3) and cal D3 2000 which im not so sure about it being good or not...it says it is for feeder insects.

anyways he told me to lightly spray the crickets with PAM (canola oil SP?) and then shake on the vitamins

It works about half the time.....it either makes the vitamins stick like concrete or kills the cricket so it is somwhat pointless.

anyways have you heard anything about doing this...im feeding my anoles this way as i am slightly worried about he pam being injested but as it is made from plants it shouldn't be a problem

I would not do that, nor do you need to. Remember, your cham ingests everything your feeder insect do - oil? Not a good idea. Also, it is a processed food so who knows what else is in there (read the ingredients). AND...oils can go rancid which can inhibit and reduce the amount of vitamin A in her system. AND...you will probably get too much dust to stick - they don’t need to be coated - just dusted. I would forget that idea for ANY of your animals. They would not eat processed vegetable oils in nature! Your Anoles needs are different form your chams, to re: dusting – don’t overdue it. Have you seen this anole site?www.kingsnake.com/anolecare/index.htm

The RepCal d3 is fine, don’t; know the other one. Make sure she is drinking a lot, too. The NCg is still a good idea to have on hand and is not expensive. I use it for Luna as soon as she becomes gravid and for a couple weeks after she lays.

I have found that the suggestion of providing something that flies will often help with tongue problems if it is just (what I call) "lazy tongue." Luna is always slow to get back to regular shooting after laying b/c she hasn't eat for so long.

i used to do that in summer....she would become lazy so i would get grass hoppers and fruitflys....tried a june bug but it was too big.

also i use a mix of vitamins for the anoles and only do the pam thing when i need to give them calcium for eggs as the crickets can run and scrape the normal dusting off if the anoles dont catch them.

i was just wondering if she was tired of crix/mealies/dark beetles so i order a small amount of silkworms....also im hoping they wont get away like a cricket can wich is part of the problem.(jump when they see the cham aiming)

I would not use the PAM at all due to the reasons I gave. The silkies will not run away! lol! I do find that Luna tires of them quickly so be prepared to have some extras to begin your own breeding
