Iguana Help

gonexenopus Jan 23, 2005 08:23 AM

my partner has "rescued" a juvie iguana from a petstore that has always had a bad rap for neglect and cruilety to animals. We have been told this iguana is an "Emerald Iguana" female. She is small, just about a foot long, with only about 5 inches of her tail remaining. (she had this in the petstore) the tip of her tail is a small black tip. She really is the most neon green, with bright teal spots on her head, i havent seen an iguana like her before.

right now she is in a 55 gallon tank. we feed her juvie iguana pellets, kale, romaine, and that reptomin softgel stuff. she is eating very well. we've got a daylight and redlight basking bulbs on the top of the tank, as well as a flourescent.

we've had her almost 6 months so far. and she hasnt grown much at all in those 6 months. is all her energy going to regrow her tail? is there something else we are missing? is she even a common emerald iguana at all? are there other species that get in the pet trade. (i've seen species miss labled before at this petstore, thats why im asking).

i'll try and get some pics of her. for now though, why is she growing so slow? or maybe this is normal? we've never had an iguana before. but between the two of us we have plenty of Herps, so we are no stranger to them. any advice would be so much appreciated! THANK YOU

First of all, your igg dont have a very nutricious diet. Collard green, mustard green, arugula, butternut squash and green beans should be added too. If his diet is poor in nutrient that may be the cause of his stalled growing.

so are foods that can be bought in a petstore not a nutritious diet? i cant imagine how much calcium is in the leafy stuff. Reptomin softgel has a wide variety of vits. and minerals, as well as the juvie iguanna pellets. i will add the stuff you mentioned to my list of food to get for her.

First Of All i consdered her diet to be pretty decent, as even my herp vet seemed to think so. what opinion does your herp vet give you regarding their diet?

btw, i keep 2 Paddle tail newts, 4 marbled salamanders, 1 leucistic texas rat snake, 1 anerythristic corn snake, 8 African Clawed frogs, 1 Pacman frog, 10 anoles, 2 tokays, a leucistic and high yellow lepoard gecko, a beardie dragon, and those are just the herps... i belong to my local Herp Society as well. so i am not new to this, just looking for help regarding iguanas, since this iguana is our first.

as far as feeding goes, dark leafy greens are always better than the alternative, except when it comes to Kale. Kale actually is not very good for igs and should only be given in small amounts, and Romaine is lettuce and therefore pretty nutritionally deviod. Your best bet would be to try Collard, Mustard or Dandilion greens mixed into her diet. Make sure you are supplementing her with Calcium as well, like you would with all reptiles. Other than that everything sounds good, im sure if you changed her diet a little bit she will start growing like a weed!

One other thing to keep in mind, although im sure your 55 is only temporary home for the little guy, 55gallons are very narrow and as your ig starts to grow the tank may actually stunt her more.

Good luck and keep us posted!!

No animal proteins. Igs are veggie eaters only. Most pelleted foods are high in animal proteins and junk stuff. If you must feed this be sure to soak it in water, until it falls apart, since its dry and will only further dehydrate her. that gel stuff can be gotten rid of as well. Get "Iguanas for Dummies" as a reference book. We all use it or recommend it. Reptisun 5.0s are the way to go with UVB I personally use a merc vapor bulb that I purchased online from reptile uv.

I have attached a food chart. Print it and take it shopping with you.

hi,

thanks for the great tips! i use Calcimize in her water. should i use a dust calcium as well? i have Reptocal for the other critters that they get once every two weeks or so.

i will get some dark leafy greens ASAP. also, what about whole hibiscus flowers? i've heard they like these, and eat them in the wild? is this true?

we've got our entire basement fixed as a "herp sanctuary", LOL. this summer, we are building Cassidy her own enclousure from a section of the basement. so she'll have an entire room for herself, complete with windows so she can look outside and get some real sunlight, cat trees for climbing and all kinds of stuff.

i'm just concerned about her growth thats all. and when do their tails start to grow back?

The tail usually grow back very slowly. I'm sure that with the diet you will give him, he'll grow like a weed ! Dont overdo it with the calcium, for my part a light sprinkling once or twice a week is enough. What is important is the combination of Uvb and calcium. Good luck with your igg and i,m sure he will be happy with the set up your going to make. Pics of that set up would be appreciated, new ideas are always welcome !
