Cage Question/Idea

atcelltech Jan 23, 2005 09:48 AM

Hi everyone,
I have been toying with an Idea for my Iquanas cage/apartment (lol) and am wondering what other think about it.

I was thinking of haveing a series of pull out trays that have rocks and water in them. Probably rocks like large (or medium??) aquarium rock. I would have maybe 1/4 inch or so of water, not going over the rocks, and probably 1 generous layer of rocks - maybe like 1 and a half layers. Anyway, under the trays (more than one tray becuase of the wieght - for me cleaning). Under the trays would be heating pads. My thought was that the heating pads would obviously evenly heat the rocks and the water. The water would help with humity and the little (not so little) ig could rest on the rocks if he wanted to. This is more for a heating and humidity solution than anything. He is in my basement (it is a finished basement - actually I have turned it into my girlfriends and I bedroom/ second living room). But especially in the winter is stays pretty cool down here and I am struggling to keep the igs cage warm.

Any way it seems that it would be pretty easy to clean this out.

Just wondering what others thought of this idea.

Yeah, that sounds cool, the only thing is make sure you dont put any actualy " hot rocks " in there.. they can cause serious burns.. they could turn out to be fatal.. watch out for that. if they were just warm i dont think that would be too much of a problem.. just be carful about the water around the heating pads obviously.. well anyways good luck and try to post some pics or something id love to see the cage!

Right - NO HEAT ROCKS. NONE.

And for the heating pads, they will be under the trays that hold the rocks and water.

Thanks for the reply.

Your welcome for the reply. And that idea of yours sounds really good. I think you should go ahead and try it out.. see if it works...

Is this going to be a open-air cage? or a glass cage?

Well, my plan actually calls for it for me to be able to change it from one to another. In the winter it will have glass sides and then in the summer I slip the glass out and replace it with screen inserts. I am pretty cheap so heat stays down in the house in the winter and no air conditioning in the summer. Of course, if the temp in the igs cage drops, I would bump up the heat in the house.
And ultimately this whole cage will be temporary until I buy a house that I looking at that is 3 bedrooms. Yeah right, they may say 3 bedrooms, but it is 1 bedroom with 2 large closets. Anyway, one of these closets (bedrooms) is going to be the igs home IF I end op buying this house.
