News of the Bend region and progress and Dennie Miller.

mchambers Jan 23, 2005 12:05 PM

You will soon be able to shop for ANYTHING as far as shopping ( not live reptile though ). I'm sure it is the same and only Dennie Miller being a reporter with the Desert Mountain Times reporting a consideration of an expansion to Wal - Mart into a super center in Fort Stockton by 2007. Also the Alpine area are looking at another proposal that could bring ( much to some of your dismay ) a Wal-Mart to the proposed loop around the city . So yes, the amount of the once blue bags ( now gray or off white ) could match the beer cans and beer cardboard empty cases tossed out the window along the highways and byways of heading south or west or east back over toward Sanderson. The road improvement has been considerably SLOWED on 170 between Terlingua and Lajitas due to all the rain that has almost ( if not ) washed the re-creation of road away several times in late 2004 and now. Watch out on your trip to west on 170 wanting to hook to River Road this year and especially if there is the continued rain prediction of this year 2005. Oh the rain ! Besides being out there for herp observations, one will see a very big increase ( first in years ) of tourism in south Brewster and Presidio counties. Camping, river tours, back packing and bird watching is pre-booking NOW. Unless it rains ! LOL !

Lance and I were thinking of making the trek to 170 this year.
Would you advise against it? Do you think most of the road construction will be complete by May or June?
I would hate to be rationed to Val Verde county this year.
Hope all is well.

Take Care,

Steven Owens

navigational if dry. Man, we almost wiped out there last year one night in Aug. and Oct. and we were not really going that fast. I know several hunters that almost wiped out last year as well. I know that the county sheriff shot craps one night on road and I mean BAD ! We got some mighty BIG chunks of clay/mud embedded in the strangest places in and around the engine from the stuff being thrown up on the wet road. The re-doing is not suppose to be complete now till possibly early 2006. But I think that includes Lajitas re-vamping loop around.

Is the road completely messed up from Terlingua to the Big Hill and beyond or just until Lajitas?

Thanks again,

Steven

13 miles from Terlingua to lajitas. It will be almost like 4 freaking lanes with WIDE shoulders. I guess to accommodate RVs ? The road crew got into some very big trouble right before the BIG chili cook-off in November because of taking out/shaving back a little more road cut than was necessary and also for taking out a huge swath of plant life at the entrance of the chili cook-off domain.

did you ever think people dont want walmart all across america rural communities are filling suit to stop walmart from crashing in there town, walmart is poor for the community is the attitude by most. walmart never helps out in a crises but rather only try's to further capitalize on the disaster of community's & forces the mom & pop businesses out, these businesses that have offered costumer service.
mike it is evident that you would ride the coat tails of your wives job to the west texas area, that is fine but i dont want to see the big super center create a monopoly at the small business mans expense. these stores cant compete with the price but i am one that believes in paying for service when i need to get in & out quickly.

What old tank, yer jealous ? But think of it this way, if ita get us down there, I don't care ! Of course I don't represent the narrow minded, just that there is STILL 2 sides of the coin when it comes to MEGA enterprise. I know of the opposition that you speak of as well as other people, but still it is conceived that the small businesses that supposedly Wally world and Targets " puts out " would be doomed or hanging by a thread to begin with. Then we have those " hobby " businesses. Ya know I come from a small town and I CAME from a small town that very few businesses were effected ultimately by a Wally world when they came in. I'm not saying it doesn't happen but think back to ANY competition when it comes to the business world. I can think of several right off the top of my head: pizza places, sub-sandwich places, mega grocery stores/chains, mega pet store chains, etc. That's just it ? And I think I said progress. I don't build them stores. I didn't have the vision of old Sam. While we say that there are people that just don't want these happenings going on, there ARE people that Do. Now I can't help it if I'm in my upper 50ties and my wife is in her early 40ties and still in the DEMAND of the blue collar management material work force of this great nation. Now can I ? I tell ya what. If it bothers ya so much about progress, why don't you all that knows me float me that loan to buy the Wildhorse or some other already established business in that neck of the country, LOL ! . Even though the MAIN city of any proposed MEGA business might be opposed, ask the farther city residents if they would mind it especially of a boonie town, a one horse town, a town in which you have only a GAS station selling food items for like 3 times as much ( not to mention hardware goods, auto goods, etc.)? Like I told your friend and he stated, sure I would make a 2 hour trip to a MEGA business to buy goods ( kinds like he does now on dog food and crap )and buy that Kentucky Fried or that Pizza Hut for dinner on the way back. ( all good fun bud ).

step over some of you all . Ya know, when they figure out that " GOD " WAS a women. And at this time when the demand and or the stress ( as now on some mega corporations ) is to put them women in the " more " pay " higher " positions. Since this is the gray-band forum and since we are to construe any material related to such, I know of several people that " pimped " other people into collecting herps before. AND I know of several people that almost was willing to " prostitute " themselves for a reptile or two. Why I bet that that one dude we had known with the initials of SP would of consider it knowing his un-dying love for alterna ! I mean if he was willing to put down $600 or whatever the story was on Juno or 277 for one snake.......
