cornman Jan 23, 2005 12:54 PM

ok so i bought this snake from a lady who was getting ready to release him, since i live in colorado i thought that probably wouldn't be good for the snake. since i was in a hurry to get him i didn't look up morphs or anything all i knew he was a corn. i recently posted his pic in the corn snake forum and they said he might have some yellow rat snake in him so i thought i woudl post his pic here.

this is his underside by his tail, and every time he sheds the orange gets darker and spreads towards his head a liitle more

Looks pure corn to me. Maybe even hypo, since I don't see much black at all on him. Got any good full-body shots? Either way, it's a big beauty!! Billy

Have to agree. I've caught reds that were similar in West Palm Beach Fla.

yeah he doesn't look to much like a yellow rat to me but in the corn snake forum they thought that the 4 "ghost" stripes down his back made him look like he had some yellow rat in him. sorry i don't have any full body pics, i just started photographing my snakes about 2 weeks ago and this guy doesn't like to sit still.

What does the top of his head look like? Is it solid yellow color? It could be a cross between a Corn and a Yellow.

cornman Jan 23, 2005 08:28 PM

yeah thats what i was thinking, but his head is not pure yellow.... however he does have a lot of yellow along the sides by his head. not a very good picture the yellow is a lot lighter than it look in this picture.

From the underside, and the head shot, I think it may be a corn x yellow. What color is the tongue? The eyes? It is a good looking snake. How long is it?

cornman Jan 24, 2005 02:07 PM

his tounge is yellow, he has orange iris's(?) and black pupils. his tounge is completly red.

cornman Jan 24, 2005 03:34 PM

what i meant to say is there is a lot of yellow near his head, his eyes have orange iris's adn black pupil, his tounge is all red and he is about 4 1/2 to 4 3/4 ft long.

Looks like it could be a deckert's rat snake from the pics. Without more info, it would be difficult to id it as a deckert's.

I doubt it is the result of a cross. I've seen plenty of larger/older corns with the 4 ghost stripes along the back. They are not indicative of yellow rat influence.

cornman Jan 23, 2005 10:55 PM

thank you for all the info... you said older corns what does that mean? he is 5 years old

Amanda E Jan 24, 2005 10:13 AM

Usually it's a result of length not age. After about 3 feet in length some cornsnakes develop these stripes. Most wild cornsnakes will have this feature. Most captive bred snakes have had these stripes bred out of them, but some still develop them.

I have a bloodred that was clean (lacked the striping) when she was younger, but once she hit the 2.5-3 foot length she started developing these stripes.

Well, by older I mean the snakes were big and struck me as being older animals.

Elaphefan Jan 27, 2005 01:34 AM

OK, how long is this snake?

cornman Jan 27, 2005 11:13 AM

wow... surprised to see you reply, he is about 4 1/2 to 4 3/4ft long
