Long time gator keeper, new to this forum.

adrenaline_head Jan 23, 2005 03:02 PM

Who is the owner of Bubba, from the gator gallery.
Does anyone else here have large, dare I say "Pet" gators.
I am looking for other private owners of large animals. Could you please post photos?..Tell stories?
I have found many people that own crocodilians upto 4 foot. I have not found many people that keep animals larger then that.
What happening to all these animals after they reach 4 feet? They just seem to disapear.

Hi,

I completely see what you are saying. I donot have any large animals at this time. But mine are still growing. I have two that are 3 1/2 feet each at this time. I am designing their adult enclosure at this time. I have been looking to see if anyone has adult indoor enclosure pics that they could share, but it seems that there are very few and far between people that actually have adult animals. The closest thing that I have seen so far is someone posted pics of their add-on enclosure to their house for their caiman. But unfortunately there is a huge size difference there. Do you happen to have pics of your gators? I would love to see them. Usually the large gators that you see pics of are in some rescue or a wildlife show of some sort. I really wish that people could be more responsible when choosing a "pet". If you want a pet then get a dog. If you want an animal that you can admire, learn from, provide a hell of challenge and enjoy then look towards animals like these. Most people get these animals as cute little hatchlings to turn around and get rid of it as soon as it hits 2-21/2 feet. Unfortunately it often turns into a poor ending for the crocodilian. But most peoples idea is:

Who cares, it's just a reptile right?

It really is sad...

when i used to work at a pet store people would come in and try to "donate" their pet gators to me. The most outrageous story i ever got was a woman who had bought a baby American Gator as a birthday present for her FOUR YEAR OLD SON! Upon realizing she couldn't take care of it, and it wasn't very nice...she tried to pawn it off on me. Im afraid she, and many others, might have ended up just letting it go. I live in maine where there are frigid winters that i doubt any gator could live through.

why dont people think before they do things like purchase an animal?
