My BD wont eat...im worried

vampchick00 Jan 23, 2005 03:11 PM

I've already asked for help once, cause my little guy wasnt going to the bathroom. I got him monday from a pet store, and they were out of crickets. First thing Tuesday got some crickets and fed my little guy at lunch - he totally pigged out, 20 crickets. After that though, he didn't have a bowel movement until saturday morning, and it was kinda runny. The little guy still hasnt eaten since tuesday, and I have tried EVERYTHING I can think of. I got wax worms, all kinda of greens, tried to wriggle them in from of him, and nothing. Is there anyway I can get food into him, and if I can't, then what? I know this can't be healthy. HELP ME!!!!
***PS. If you need to know temp and any other questions, its all in this forum under the topic HELP!!!***

My suggestion is to get it to a vet, probably has parasites.

Definately at least bring a fecal sample to the vet, even if he turns out to not have parasites, better safe than sorry. Put some fresh poopie in a baggie and take it to your vet, call them first and tell them you are coming. All you ahve to do is drop the fecal off and they will call you with the results, it is pretty cheap too.

Until then, minimize stress on your beardie by not handling him. maybe even cover up part of the tank with a towel so he feels safer.

Problem is, he isnt eating, and so isnt pooping. He went once, and my mom saw it before me and tossed it into the garbage. Would parasites be a problem right away, cause what if it takes another week for him to do his business?
Thanks for the reply though, I appreciate all the help I can get now.

I had this problem once before, fed my BD a little chicken baby food by just putting a little on the outside of his mouth, and letting him lick it off. It was enough to get a small . . . movement. . . to check for parasites.

The same thing happened to mine when I got him. He pigged out the night we got him, then wouldn't eat for about 5 days. Then he was fine and started eating again. It is likely he is stressed from the move. Or he is constipated. I didn't check your other message, but the temp needs to reach 100 degrees for them to digest their food properly. You could try soaking him in a warm tub. I would wait a few more days. Did you feed him leaf lettuce?

The temperature definately reaches over 100 F in the basking area...usually it is more around 105 F, so I don't think that heat is the problem. I've done just about everything I can think of to get him to eat. Hes really lethargic, like not moving around very much, and he sleeps a lot - he didn't when I first got him. I just feel so useless, I'm scared for the little guy.

Hmm... Mine was still pretty active when this happened. How old is he? If he is over a year or so, he could be brumating. He could also be dehydrated. Has he been drinking water? Do you mist him? Mine hates being misted, but you can put drops of H20 on his snout and he should lick them off. If he doesn't seem any better in the next 2 or 3 days, a vet check would be the best option. Good Luck!

The guy at the pet store said my beardie was 4-5 months old, and hes just over 9 inches now. I've tried misting, but he runs away, and i dap water on his nose a lot, and he just ignores it. Im really thinking about the vet, but not to sound cheap, but I'm a student (17) and I dont have a job, and hardly have any money, and just spent almost all of it on the supplies for the little guy. I want the best for my beardie, but I would like to avoid the vet. Tomorrow I think I'll try bathing him to maybe get a little more water in him.

Thanks for your advice though!

Mine was the same age and size, and I totally understand about the money. I am an unemployed college student! After you try the bath, which is supposed to help him poop, just leave him alone for a few days, dont touch him or handle him at all, and keep your hands out of his cage as much as you can. He probably just needs to adjust to his new environment. If you don't have a hiding place, get one, and if there are crickets in there that he's not eating, take them out until he's ready to eat. Don't feed him lettuce, because it is mostly water and can give him diarrhea. Offer greens like mustard greens or collard greens.
