Bill Chris Adam somebody...

Danny Conner Jan 23, 2005 04:11 PM

I need to get in touch with Adam or someone. I have something running through my collection. Manifest itself with smooth areas devoid of skin. Appears only to be on dorsal surface. Advanced stages seems to be sloughing of skin. Rapidly followed by death. Only symptom I can see are these sores. They continue to eat. Three different species(11 animals) in this one enclosure. All crocs noone seems immune. All seem to be healthy and are at least 4 years old. Appears to be highly contagious though so far only one enclosure is affected.
This is urgent please respond. Have pics I can email.
If you email a phone number I will return your call ASAP.
Thanks
Danny

I don't know offhand what might be going on. Do you have access to the book "Diseases of Crocodilians"? I lent my copy out so I can't refer to it to see if anything looks familiar.

Best of luck to you in your quest to stop it.

Bill,

Do you happen to know where I could get that book from? None of my crocs seem unhealthy or anything, but it might be agood reference.

Thnx in advance,

Chris

There's a fine newer book out: "Crocodiles: Biology, Husbandry and Diseases." You can get in at Amazon.com for about $170.00. There's another established one by the folks at Samutprakarn Crocodile Zoo in Thailand. Is that the one you're referring to, Bill?

The one I have is the Color Atlas that Ralph mentions below. As much as I'd like the other, it's a little too spendy for me.

I got mine a couple years ago from Zoo Book Sales. They have a lot of crocodilian titles, including the all the CSG proceedings of which I have about half of them. Check them out, their prices are the best around. If you call, tell Eric I sent you - it won't get you a better price but it'll let him know I'm sending leads his way... for the negotiating process on the remainder of the CSG series

Danny, there's no way to diagnose this from a description. Photos might be useful, but the sores may be a secondary infection unrelated to the cause of death. You could get a skin biopsy taken by the vet to try and ID a causitive organism, but in the meantime I'd strongly recommend an immediate course of antibiotics. Tetracycline is a good start. You'll have to inject intramuscularly.
