Georgia black rats...

Alan Garry Jan 23, 2005 05:35 PM

To those of you who have seen or collected blackrats in Georgia, can you post some photos or at least describe some of the ones from the area. Do they retain much pattern or do they become pretty black. Do any of them have red skin between their scales.
A friend showed me 2 that supposedly came from Georgia. Both have red tongues. One is mostly black with some white edging on the scales, with a lot of red innerstitial skin, and a fair amount of black mottling on the ventrals becoming darker towards the tail. The other one looks like a dark lindheimeri, or some of the grey rats with a fair amount of yellow and red between the scales. The blacker one looks alot like the ones I've seen from Missouri, Arkansas, and eastern Kansas. If you've seen anything like that in Georgia, please share.
Thanks in advance.

I would think that a lot of it would have to do with where in Georgia they were caught.
I have caught several black rats in Georgia. And lots just across the Georgia border in Tennessee. The ones I caught in Georgia were within about 50 miles from Tennessee and looked the same as the ones I have caught in Tennessee.
I have caught almost solid black ones, ones with quite a bit of white, some more brown then black and some with quite a bit of red between the scales. The largest majority just look like you basic black rat snake.
This is one that was caught about 5 miles from the Georgia border in Hamilton County, Tennessee. Typical of the area.

Thanks for responding. Do you recall if any have had red tongues? That's what made me question whether they were from Georgia. Most of the ones I've seen from east of the Mississippi river have black. The guy I got them from is in west Texas and he didn't have exact locality information. Nice snake by the way. I've seen a lot of them in the eastern states that look similar.

I do not remember ever seeing one with a red tongue.
