Hatchlings are so small that they are easily and quickly dehydrated. When I was raising my two from hatchlings I soaked them DAILY in water while I prepared their food. I never skipped a day. This keeps them hydrated, makes sure that they have available water for drink, and increases their appetites greatly. Also I kept the hatchlings on soil/cypress mulch with one end heated by a ceramic heat emitter. Under the emitter I frequently poured water and kept damp as it would evaporate from the heater. My Sulcata hatchlings have thrived with these conditions. I believe that soaking is as important as diet in keeping their growth smooth and their eyes bright. I continued this daily soaking until they were large enough to house outdoors. Even then I will place them in a large tub at least once a week in the summer for a refreshing soakie bath.
