My DI is salty...

LLB Jan 23, 2005 07:45 PM

I realize DIs and chucks along with other species exspel salt thru their nostrils but my male DI has it litterally caked on his nose. I break off the salt every day and by the next evening I see the same problem again. Aside from his "frosty" nose he seems perfectly healthy... eats great and looks great. My other DI and my chuck dont appear to have the same problem and I feed them all the same exact food. The basking area gets 100 degrees and I have a good 8.0 UVB bulb over them. Food consists of kale, collard greens, mustard greens and all the other grocery store greens that do not have lettuce in their name... cant think of them all right now but they are the common greens everyone uses. What do you all think is going on here? Should I be concerned? Thanks

How is it going Brandon!!

I mainly wanted to say hello----- I am not sure where you draw the line between normal salty crust & way too much. I doubt it is too much to worry about if his diet & appitite is normal & healthy. Maybe he just needs you to toss in some extra pepper to balance it out!!

I have noticed that some of my Iggys would have more salt on their nose than normal for a few days then it would mostly go away. Reptiles don't sweat so they get rid of the excess salt this way!
Years ago I had a Desert Iguana that would get a respitory infection in the Winter sometimes and he had more salt on his nose than normal. I would give him bird vitamins and the infection would go away. This was before they had vitamins readily available for reptiles.
If you are curious, you might try holding him in the palm of your hand if he has an infection you will feel a vibration when he breaths. If you do, this is wheezing like what people get when they get a bad cold or the flu. You could give him a good reptile vitamin. Or if real concerned take him to a vet. Keep him warm like the mid 80's at night and 100 or so in the day. Bill.
