Me the newbie again...still nervous

vampchick00 Jan 23, 2005 08:53 PM

Something I just thought about... I have a piece of driftwood in my tank, and lately, my beardie is staying in the shade. From what I've been reading about past posts on here, my little guy seems stressed. Would it be a good idea to remove the branch from the tank altogether, or would this change stress him more. And if hes stressed, and this is causing him to not eat, any suggestions on how to destress him? I just don't know what to do!

Ok I'll see if I can help some here... I have read most of the posts but not all of them ...

1) a young dragon of less than 10 months normaly is not going to burminate; but they can sometimes.
2) most of the time a young dragon that is getting good light and heat that wants to hide and sleep is sick. often has parasites.
3) most vets will work with you on payments if you will talk to them.
4) if I recall you just got the dragon??

if the dragon has been with you for less than 10 days and it wants to hide it may just be stress. in that case the more you do the more the dragon will be stressed and thats not good.

reptiles have funny ways sometimes....

if they feel to much stress and confusion they will kind of play dead and close thier eyes in the hopes that "it will go away"

if the dragons lower eyelids look dark thats a stress sign.

if the dragon is in otherwise good health then let it adjust for a few days.

a vet can give it fluids and vitamines if it needs them and can give an exam to tell you if it has good fat pads and other indicators of health.

also the burmination and sleeping are related to a combination of lights and temps.

when night time temps drop and daylenght is less than 10-12 hours a dragon may start to burminate as cold nights and short days == winter.

so if the breeders had 14 hour days and warm nights and you have shorter lights and lower night temps it could trigger the sleep / burmination.

also light for a bd should be "All around" one spot of light that is strong with an otherwize not well lit room can also confuse them... they are from the outback where it is normally sunny and well lit during the day.

hope this helps with a few ideas ...

Cover up half of his tank completely with a towel so he is in the dark, this may help him feel less stressed.

I know what its like for money to be an issue. I had to turn to my parents when my skink needed to go to the vet because i was broke too.
