pruining a schefflera lele help please

hello,i have aschefflera plant for my jackson in a 3x2x2 screen cage and it is bigger than the cage.i was wondering how to prune it without killing it.thanks for any help. matt

Hey.
A Schefflera plant can be pruned in almost any way to fit into a particular space. Just make sure that it has some leaves left to carry out photosynthesis and it will be alright. Plants are a lot less tricky than chameleons!

Hi Matt,

the rule of thumb when you prune - pretty much anything - is to not take more than 1/3 of the total plant (height or width) and to always cut to above a "node." This is where the stem meets the main branch. Cut the main stem just above stem node/joint (leaving about 1/8-1/4' max above the joint).

Once pruned if it is not given decent light the new growth may be a bit spindly. I always find it helpful to have a few plants to rotate thru the year.
