Setting the mood...

rwoodyer Jan 24, 2005 01:39 AM

So, I have cycled my adult female and brown back male for awhile. Both have refused meals for at least three weeks. I put them together and all the do is lay on top of each other. I am 100% positive of their sex, anyone got any other tricks to set the mood.

FYI Neither has been bred previously, male is 1400 grams female is 1500 grams. I keep the daytime temp at 90 and nightime at 80, normally I keep it at 95 all day. They are in a rack tub with no hides. They have been together for several days. I was planning about four days together and four apart from now to when ever they decide to get interested in starting a family...lol

So if anyone has any tricks...

For cooling, I let the ambient temp go down to mid to low 70's at night. It's been working for me. Lights go off at around 5:30 pm.

Candles, alcohol (snakes choice), slow music.

Do you have any other females to put him with? Try switching up partners to get him kick started.

Another "trick" is to put him with another male and allow them to spar for a little bit and then place him back with the female. Sometimes if you put an old shed from the female in with the two males you want to spar it can get them competing fairly well. I've seen it done both with and without the shed skin and both ways seemed to help kick start a "lazy" male.

It could also be that even though your male is of more than adequate size, he just doesn't know what he is doing yet (or doesn't want to). This scenario sucks for any of us especially if it turns out you'll have to wait another year. I wouldn't worry though, be patient and it'll happen when you least expect it...kind of like switching to new prey for picky eaters.
