Sea turtle evolution & Anatomy info plz!

Mark_b Jan 24, 2005 09:18 AM

Hi There

I’m looking for information on sea turtles, mainly there evolutional path e.g. which came first tortoises or turtles etc

And details about them getting oxygen from the water? Using something called the pharynx? In mouth? And taking in water through their anal opening and collecting oxygen?

Also some information on there anatomy! Do they have ears? Do they use there ears? Can they feel vibrations through there body/jaw like snakes? I know they don’t have any actually 'openings'

I don’t know if any of this is species specific, but I’m mainly concentrating on loggerhead turtles!

I have searched the web and through my reptile books but either no information or very undetailed! So really giving me links to sea turtle sites aint much use

Thanks for any help you can give me!
Cheers
Mark

I strongly recommend a book by Orenstein called "Survivors in Armor". It's a great resource for all kinds of turtle info, including evolution of all testudines forms.

I had it through interlibrary loan at one point in time. If you're at a university, use that. If not, I saw it at Barnes and Noble once. It's kind of expensive.
