Where have all the striped kings gone? PIC of lonely female...

snakepimp Jan 24, 2005 09:31 AM

I heven't seen a really nice striped cali king for sale in a long time. I saw some today advertised as stripers, but they were really do-dash pattern. I got this female recently, I have seen more perfect stripers than she in the past, but not for some time. I would love to get a "perfect" striped male for her...
It seems as if everyone has gone for the "designer" looks which are aberrent, inelegant, and just not pleasing to my eye, from a "design" perspective. (see signature for disclaimer, please)
How is striping inherited? Is it a line-bred trait, or is it a a predictable genetic mutation? My understanding is that it was locality derived and line-bred. I woould just hate to think that there weren't any "pure" (whatever that means) stripers out there any more.
I apologize for any ignorance I might be displaying. I really don't know much about the specifics of L. getula, I am eager to learn, however.

Striped cali Kings are very "Pure" not the result of years of selective breeding at all. I've seen some really nice perfectly striped albino males on [bleep].com and Faunaclassifieds.com...

Now the problem with cali kings is that they've lost their popularity, no one really wants to breed the regular stuff any more cuz they don't sell well, and when they do sell the don't fetch that much $$$$. i personally love the solid striped (b/w) cali kings, I'm just patiently waiting to get more space to start my "collectors edition" (Snake I'd like to own, but not breed) to my colony. You've got a really nice female there, hope you find a suitable mate for her.

I used to collect them near Borrego. The area on the map known as "scissors crossing" (a T intersection of road) has pure desert stripers and abberants. Even the banded ones have the potential for striping. This is the only place they are found in the country.

The first time I went loking there was in the early 80's. Someone told me to go to the intersection and start night cruising from that point on. I got the intersection known as Scissors Crossing at 3pm and right at the intersection on the dirt shoulder (directly in the sun) was a large adult male striper waiting for me

This is a place that is less than approx 5 miles and IMHO the desert stripers should be under a protected status. People I talk to still find them there every spring.

Brown with yellow stripe, wild-caught female from Carlsbad, CA. Rich Gassaway has a female that looks just like this one from the same area. I will try and get a male from that locale this spring (next month actually).

I've never seen a striped cal king from Arizona; just banded and someone posted a pic last year of one from Arizona with a small amount of aberrancy.

Excuse me if I misinterpreted your post but Snakepimp posted a desert striper from the S-22 area. I thought he meant desert stripers and not coastal phase. Not that it matters with all the designers out there but it would be nice to keep that Scissors line pure.

His questions were about striped cal kings.

Carlsbad is a locality just as much as Scissors Crossings.

Stripe phase have always been my favorite look in Cali Kings, and I was (am) ignorant of their origins, but you have all been a great help. I really like the "Desert phase s-22 area" types, but they are all fantastic, thank you all. Now, who has a male to match the girl I posted? Email me!( Kerby already has, re: the Lavenders...
