FANGS and/or venom

00235020 Jan 24, 2005 12:45 PM

Hello, I have had many hognose snakes in my day. I have come to learn over the years that they have fangs for poping toads(natural prey) I have also heard many rumors about people being bit and suffering minor envenomation or possible just bacteria in the saliva. Wondering if anyone here can relate to these rumors or has any other interesting ideas/theorys.

Chris

do hognose and/or ring neck snakes have venom glands or is it just bacteria from the saliva that causes the swelling etc..?

Yes hoggies have a mild venom they use to paralyize(sp?) their prey. The effects of this venom on humans is mild and usually consists of redness, itching, slight swelling and mild pain.

No popping comments? most people have decided that the toad popping theory is bogus, and I agreed UNTIL I heard a distinct popping noise once while my eastern was eating a live toad. The toad did not deflate, but I was astounded nontheless. the popping theory is not 100% B-S as most people suspected...but I dont know the source of the pop. thought I'd add that.
