Rat gender question...probably stupid.

Mothi Jul 05, 2003 05:35 PM

Is this baby rat a boy or a girl. I am thinking boy. It is 9 days old from breeding a male Self Black Dumbo (carries Siamese) to a female Black Hooded (from Siamese to a Beige breeding). Since I don't know what a Siamese baby rat looks like, I am hoping this light colored one might be one....otherwise I guessing it is a beige. Anyone breeding siamese rats?

I am thinking boy, but wait and see if you can see nipples later and that will tell you. And your idea that it could a siamese is good. I have a line of dumbos that throw blues and what look like whites...that are off white like yours and the dark points don't come in for quite a while....like weeks or a couple months.

The distance between the parts is the way to tell--I would say that looks like a boy, but is a bit difficult to tell...still too young.
If I had to bet on it, I would say male.

There are no stupid questions. There are occasionally stupid answers though.

Was there a pic?

There is an excellent disc on gender id in the archive. Something about the distance between the pooper and the pee-er.

This may be one of those stupid answers.

The other thing you may be able to do, is tell male from female when the hair gets a bit thicker. Females have nipple spots. I don't know how reliable it is, but I've not been steered too wrongly by it yet. I read somewhere that male rats don't develop nipples.. *shrugs*
