how to tell difference

hey I was wondering what are the main differences in midland painteds and easterns thanks in advance

Easterns are the only painted turtle (maybe the only turtle) to have the carapace scutes line up to form straight lines across the back. If you see three lines across the back, going from side to side, then you have an eastern. I have seen some easterns with a very thin red line running down the middle of the back, too.
