Sonoran Desert Boa

JonP Jul 05, 2003 06:09 PM

I was having an arguement with a friend about Sonorans. She thought that they were there own species. I thought they were BCI. So we got on the internet to look and when we started pulling up pictures on pages ans such they were al labeled
Mexican Boa(Sonoran)
Can someone please explain this to me, and tell me if they are BCI or what?
Thanks
Jon

The Mexican, or Sonoran, boa is Boa constrictor imperator, and is just the northern extreme of the subspecies. It was originally described as a seperate species (B. mexicana, Jan, 1863) but that is a very outdated name.

To my knowledge they are a subspecies of BCI. There was some debate about if it should be BC Mexicana, but that classification was tossed out.
