Breeding Crickets

bluebug32 Jan 25, 2005 10:34 AM

Does anyone here breed their own crickets? I ordered 500 and figured it wouldn't hurt to give it a shot, so I put a dish of moist potting soil in the tank with them and they immediately deposited eggs. I took the dish out and made sure to keep it moist and put it in a baggie on top of the tank, near a heat source because I read that they would be eaten if left in the tank.

Was this correct? Now what?

I've tried breeding crickets several times and always gave up. So good luck to you. You did the first part right. The biggest trick for me was to keep the egg dish warm and damp without getting total mold. ventilation is a MUST to prevent mold. take it out of the baggie (er, its prob too late, you posted 2 days ago, sorry!) and put it in a container that crickets cant climb. other than that, just wait 2 weeks for pinhead crix to hatch out. they die quickly without enough moisture but again too much will kill them.
