mainly due to the amount of black in the side medallions. Here is a pic of the pastel I picked up from John Lokken. Notice the reduced black.

And here is an EBV red group "pastel". You can notice the reduction of black in her medallions too.

I am no expert but the one in that picture definately fits the description. I didn't know if you wanted us to see another pic because of the way your first post started. The first is not the second could be pastel.

If this is the right picture of the snake you are interested in knowing if it is a pastel I would sadly have to reply with a no.
The snake while clean and haveing nice color has too much black in the saddles and especially on the medalions to ba a pastel. As the pastel gene(s) are a reduction of the melanin pigmentation this animal does not quantify as a pastel, sorry. Nice animal either way.

Anyone with actual experince with pastels please provide imput.

Hi Eric,
I have posted my opinion many times here on Kingsnake in regards to the Pastel issue. I firmly believe that the name is horribly over used and that because of this the true proven genetic Pastels have been degraded to the same point as just a nice clean Colombian boa. There are several proven genetic Pastel type lines out there that are with out a doubt a true Boa Morph. I believe that the true pastel lines, such as Ronne’s pastel dreams, the Red Groups, and yes my High Pink Hypos, are a genetically inherited trait and not just the result of line or selective breeding. These boas are Hypomelonistic in a way that is not related to the Salmon’s or Orange tails. The will often show extreme pinks right from birth and just get darker pink with age. Most of the normal black markings are replaced by brown instead and their offspring will show these traits in their first generation showing the trait to be somewhat co dominant.
My particular line of High Pink Hypos is some how linked with my striped line of Boas, but oddly enough the least of the striped siblings are normally the ones displaying the most High Pink traits.
Now I also believe that there are other outstanding looking Colombians with similar traits to the different pastel lines and in fact may even be the same genetic trait, but unproven they are simply very pretty boas and that is still a dang good thing to have. But as always these are just my thoughts on the issue and not the gospel of the boa gods and therefore should not hold too much weight.
Well, I am going to bed now to wake up to beautiful day number 106 and hoping that the babies will find their way out of Raindrop while you sleep…..

From experience I have some babies that are so very tempting to call something or other but they are just very very pretty boas from very very pretty parents.

I'll attempt to post a pic; I still have 14 of them

I would have to say that the super pink one is a keeper and the almost Motley looking one should be also, if not and you are selling them or looking to trade them let me know.
Thanks
Hoppy
