Driving home from our cabin in MN my brother and I stopped to rescue an adult western painted turtle from the highway. As I was getting out of the car another motorist ran the poor thing over! It's shell is broken on the top, a wound goes right through it on the side and it is leaking a little blood. The wound is about a centimeter long. The bottom of her shell is a bit worse off. It's been scraped up pretty good and there is a piece of shell behind her front leg that seems to be coming off. There is sort of a "blood blister" type wound near the piece that is falling off that runs under the shell for a good inch. She is alert and active and the shell seems sound, she looks to be in good health, other than being smashed by a car. I'm worried that she may have some internal injuries. Is there anything I can or should do for this little girl? I mean to release her into a nearby pond, but I'd like to do my best to make sure she'll be okay first. Thanks!
