New Iguana Owner-I have some questions

sonic5115 Jan 25, 2005 03:36 PM

Hello,
I am a recent owner of two iguanas. I bought one two weeks ago. He is very aggressive and won't let me pick him up. .He always tail whips me! Any pointers on how to make him feel safer so I can train him?
I also purchased another iguana a week later. He is more laid back than the first. He lets me handle him and the two seem to be getting along. They lay on top of each other. My concern and question is that are iguanas territorial of thier food dishes? Because I don't think the iguana I bought second if eating. Maybe he is afraid to eat cuz' he thinks that the food isn't his? I bought two food bowls to see, but no results. The two iguanas are juveniles, but the one I bought first is bigger. Any suggestions?
Also, from anybody's experience, what veggie is the iguanas favorite? Right now, I'm feeding them Romaine lettuce, chopped up carrots, and some store bought Iguana food.

Well, having two males together isn't going to be good because there will be competition. They will also hurt eachother. Lettuce isn't going to do anything so some mustard greens or collard greens would be good, mine gobbles collard greens up right when i get em in. There's a list down a few posts of few that you can get them, it's a really good list. That store bought iguana stuff isn't too good, from what other posters say, so I quit using it. Are you using any viamin supplements?

My suggestion to the aggresive male is to just hold him alot, When i got mine he was a tid bit fiesty but now he's calm and sitting on my computer speakers right now. I asked what I could do to calm him down in another post and someone told me that if you have them out, and they are fighting to get out of your grasp, don't let them. And don't put them back in their cage, cause it will show that they can do that and get their way. It's been good so far, but that's just my 5 cents.

Thanks for you advice, man. Yes, I am sprinkling a calcium supplement on top of the lettuce and carrots. I was feeding them the store bought stuff, but they didn't really eat it.
Your advice about the way to handle them is very effective - DON'T LET THEM GET THEIR WAY!! Is their any other supplments I should be feeding them?
Also, they are both shedding, so I've been misting them with water about 3 to 4 time a day. Is that ok?

Reptivite has been suggested to me, I haven't had the time to go get it but it's getting done tomorrow. Yes, misting their cage when they are shedding is very good, it helps them to shed their skin, keep doing that until a complete shed. good-luck with ur ig!

You'll have to experiment, as they're all different. As for Ike, his faves seem to be collard, green beans, kiwi and mango. Other than the mango, he doesn't seem thrilled about anything that isn't green, as he's turned his nose up at watermelon, sweet red pepper, parsnips and papaya (don't blame him there, I can't stand papaya myself
