Gravid Fat Tail Gecko & egg help please!

Accidentalherps Jan 25, 2005 03:49 PM

I work at a petstore, we received two Fat Tail Geckos in good health a little over a week ago. I noticed one was very very fat. Flipping her over I could tell that 1) its a she and 2) she appears to have eggs! there are two white oblong masses clearly visible in her lower abdomen, one on each side.
I made her a little moist box to hopefully lay her eggs in. I've read the time to laying is about 30 days.
She gets dusted crickets every day.

The manager has agreed not to sell her until after she lays, and then I can attempt to hatch the eggs.

I have a spare 10 gallon here at home, with a heatlamp. I've read about the sex of the hatchlings depending on the temperature they are incubated at. How long is it until they usually hatch?

It *sounds* easy enough, but many things sound easier than they actually are. Is there anyone on here who has successfully incubated and hatched FTG eggs?
pointers?
advise?

We have flightless fruit flies at the store, and that's what I"m planning on feeding the babies, should this all work out.

So far I"m doing well with my baby leo, who seems to grow longer every day and has a nice fat tail. My other herps are doing well too, so I take this all as a sign I might do ok by the eggs. I did fail at raising a baby emerald swift tho.

If anyone has photos of a gravid female, a good incubating set up, healthy eggs vs sick eggs, or babies could you post them?

thanks

Sasha

your best bet to incubate succesfully is to use a incubator. you can attempt a home made one but a bought one works much better. eggs must have a stable temp and proper humidity the entire incubating time for the eggs to hatch. eggs take between 30 and 60 days normally depending on the temp you incubate at. do a search on incubating eggs, there very much like leo's but you should find specific aft info. one important thing is when shes lays them and you remove them to incubate they must remain in the same position you find them, i mark the top with a little dot for reference.

Hi, I had to buy an incubator so I could get high enough temps. Honestly, I've been afriad of going below 82 degrees F. Also, don't assume she'll take 30 days to lay. I got 23 days from a female who wasn't in optimal condition.
