Beardies owners that own their homes.....

Amk2109 Jul 05, 2003 06:46 PM

Hi my husband and I are getting ready to move from a rental property to our newly built home. I am wondering if anyone here owns their home and if they have told their homeowners insurance company that they have exotic pets. I am not looking to lie to my insurance company but I am curious if someone can tell me how that affects your homeowners insurance cost?

It will only affect your home owners policy cost if you would like extra coverage for them in case of loss due a fire or other homeowner disaster.

yeah, typically they only care about your pets if you have dogs that are on the "dangerous dog breed" list.

A friend of mine is an underwriter for State Farm. I asked her the same thing about a week ago. Insurance companies have been hit hard with claims the last few years. Mainly due to mold problems. Altough unrelated to exotic animals they are looking for any reason for higher premiums. The biggest group of people targeted are those who are starting or have newer policies. I wouldn't bring it up unless cornered about it. Not being dishonest but being selective about what you let them know. You could face up to double the rates or higher copays. It is becoming a problem here in Florida and she said it has just begun. Sorry for no good news but at least you can be prepared.

This was discussed on the ball python forum not long ago. Some people there either got refused or knew friends refused becasue they owned snakes, and they are considered exotic and dangerous.

Thank you everyone for all your help. Since the insurance company never directly asked me if I have exotic animals then I am going to selectively choose not to say anything.
