My Snake, Wish I had a Pic, Just a question

Anole16 Jan 25, 2005 06:11 PM

Well, I took everyone's suggestions and read them over and over again.

I Finally got my snake 4 Days ago and he is doing great! The tag on the cage at PETCO (where I got him) said ribbon snake but I can see the vertical stripes on the labial scales. Therefore I propose he is a red sided garter snake because of the red scales on his side.(Although I am no expert I could be wrong but he looks so much like them, completely identical) He ate three days ago by devouring 2 rosy reds. I tried a cricket powdered with reptocal but I think he was full.

Anyways, to the point. I read on the forum and in books that when snakes shed that the hide and get "hazy." Well, my snake has been hiding for the past two days and has only come out for a minute or two when he comes out.(only a couple of times. He is not hazy though. Do you think he is just digesting the fish?
Or is something else going on? Thanks

Hiding is a normal behavior for most snakes, especially if they are not particularly hungry. I have about 13 varieties of Garters and many of them hide except when feeding. I never see my Ribbon Snake at all unless I disturb him. He me become more "visible" with time, especially if you work with him a bit. Stop working with him if he goes off feed though. Stick to fish until you can convert him to frozen/thawed pinkies and forget the crickets.
