AGH! The landlord used a fogger...

MdngtRain Jan 25, 2005 07:34 PM

Our landlord came & used a fogger this evening. My fiance was under teh impression it was just going to be a spray can & thought nothing of it till the stuff started leaking into the apartment n(our door is crappy, has cracks that we can't block off with a towel... Anyway, by the time I got home to get the lizards & my fiance out, about 30 minutes had passed... (we live in new england, too cold to go out & wait in the snow with everyone).
so I have 3 questions:
~is rinsing the cham cage in the shower for /2 hr enough to ensure my cham's safety?
~will all my lizards die after breathing the crap in for 30mins
~if I had the mealworms covered, & they are still alive tomorrow, would it be stupid for me to continue to use them as food?

Thanks!!
~C

thats a hard question....i wouldn't use the mealies if the fog got to them....the amount of poison in them will be small but in the cham it will accumulate from the consumption of the worms....sorry it sounds like a loss for this batch if the fog got them....let'em breed and use the babies.

for the reptiles make sure they get clean water and wash off the cages. whatch for any behavoir changes to see if they are affected.

By the way make sure you write down the fogger's name and chemicals incase your chams get sick cause maybe the vet might have something to reverse binding of the chemicals in their bodies. Keeps us posted. I wouldn't take any chances of any feeders in the apartment that might have had a chance to be in contact with the fog.

well, that sucks!! I agree about all that has been said. Will your herps willingly take showers? It sure wouldn't hurt for any that you can get in there.

Toss the mealies and any other feeders that may have been affected. Call your vet and get his opinion as well. I know it is cold up here right - and you are probably in the midst of more snow, but if you can air out the rooms by cracking windows taking turns in each room so the whole place doesn't feeze and run a fan to move the air around and dissipate. Hey, I feel for ya! Good luck

I would also TELL YOUR LANDLORD that you have pets who are extremely sensitive to pesticides and that you MUST have advance warning before he sprays anything again. There is probably some regulation that requires advance notice anyway. Tell him you will gladly move them for the day he plans to spray. He could be liable for any pet (or feeder) losses you suffer due to his actions. Unless of course you aren't supposed to have pets.

Well, I showered the chams for about 1/2hr & wiped down the other cage. I called my property manager & yelled at him for being so stupid (he knows all the animals we have). I told him that he or the landlord is responsible for replacing all the food & also for giving us advance warning... he did not say anything... he's a j***...
The kids all seem to be ok for the moment. My vet has no ideas on what to use to help keep the pesticides from binding... even for the dog =(.
I bought all new food & am replacing the substrate for my other lizards... tho today I give up one cham & the leo & collard (my fiance wanted to kill me for the electric bill...), so I will tell my friend (who is taking all of them) to keep an eye out for anything strange. Thanks for all the suggestions guys. =o)
