?'s about housing together & breeding

AlexBo Jul 05, 2003 07:14 PM

i have 1 (female?) beardie about 3 months old, the tank is a 48"x18" would it be ok to keep another one in there too? Different color morphs can be kept together, right?

If they breed could i incubate a few, not all of them?
What do those of you who have bred breadies before do with all those beardies?

Thanx.

Alex,

It seems you need to do a bit of homework. If you breed dragons, they don't just have one clutch from the breeding. The females can retain sperm. My female laid 5 clutches from one mating. If you don't intend on incubating all those eggs and finding homes for the babies, I wouldn't let them mate. Even if you don't want all the babies, she is still going to produce the eggs and that is hard work for them.

I have only seen you here for a day or two asking a few general questions. Please take the time to read a couple different care sheets from breeders web sites and from Kingsnakes caresheet page. Do the homework before you jump in any deeper.

Good luck,

Oh,, yes two color morphs can be kept together, That's all they are is color morphs,, same kind of animal.

Alex,

Here are some care sheets for you. It's best to read as many as you can. You have to try to find the info that is comfortable for you and your dragons, in the type setup you have. What works for one, doesn't always work for another.
Read, read, read...

(hope you guys don't mind me linking to your care sheets,, this guy needs much info)

Here is a great one
www.dachiu.com/care/care.html

vandivers.com/bdinfo.html

www.lynnsbeardeddragons.com/CAREINFO.html

beardeddragons.biz/CareSheet.htm

That should get you off to a good start. If you read all of those, they should answer most of your questions, if not, then ask away.

Good luck

at 3 months old, you dont even want them to breed, the general rule is 18 months, but i say at LEAST a year old. Until them, keep them seperate. And all that stuff that JoelR said, lol. g'luck

ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, you thought i wanted to breed them now? no i was just curious about what you do with all the eggs.
I wasn't going to consider breeding until 2 yrs.

PS what DOES everyone do with all the beardies??? Does anyone here breed and sell beardies as a job or something like that?

Your not going to make a living off of it unless you go big. Most of us just do it on the side. If you are lucky, it pays for itself. The costs add up quick. Food, vit's, vet bills, lights, electricity, caging, substrate, more food, etc. shipping supplies etc.
When you only have one or two, you just can't imagine how much more it would cost to have 100 babies, not to mention all the ones you decide to hold back and the others you get to breed back to them etc....

One thing that has really hit me is how much poop can be in a bin of 10 7week old babies. (just from a couple hours) You literally have to sift at least 2 times a day. I'm not talking a couple scoops LOL,,

It's more work than you think & unless you really love these guys you can get burnt out.

I think if you wait 2yrs, you should know by then if it's something you really want to get into. (I waited 2yrs)

Good luck in your quest.
