Maryland isn't north! Black Rats are found as far north as Canada. It is a nice example of a Mid Atlantic Black Rat. LOL

I grew up in northern NJ on the NY state line and all the black rats I caught as a kid were nearly uniform jet black as adults. I just like those compared to the more southerly (KY,TN, Carolinas, GA, etc.) populations that retain more of their patterns as adults. Gorgeous snakes just the same, but there's something about a big, black rat that is just extra special to me. Billy

Jimmy,

You are right about that. That is one great looking snake. I have two 03 Black Rats myself. One is from N.C. and the other is from PA. They have that great jet black coloring with no red and very little white showing on the sides.

The ones around here have a lot of pattern and color variations and although some of them can be extremely nice those solid black ones are beautiful.
Something like that could get me back into black rat snakes.

Another great looking Black Rat Snake. Thanks for the photo.

Thanks. I caught him while driving home from the hot exhibit at the Catoctin Zoo. He crawled onto the road 50 yards ahead -- the herping equivalent of a fish jumping into the boat. This one didn't bite or musk unlike most of the young ones I've come across.
