Still looking for info. on temps for those using Flexwatt

wingert Jan 25, 2005 11:23 PM

Using a temp gun, what is the reading of the tape it's self? Not the temp in the tub but the temp right on the tape.

Heat tape does not just reach a set temp and shut off, it depends on the ambient temp. It also depends on what width and wattage Flexwatt you are using. The surface of the 3" 6 Watt will get hotter than the 11" 20 Watt under the same conditions. The only true way to keep a constant temp is by using a thermostat. You can get away with using a rheostat pretty easily but keep in mind the temp will fluctuate with your room temp. You can also regulate the temperature buy increasing or decreasing the distance between the heat tape and the floor of your cage. This will normally provide a nice hot spot and prevent the heat tape from overheating but you are not going to get a consistent temp.

I temp gunned 6 different rack systems and they were all different. Ranging from 92F to 111F, all used for Ball Pythons. There's WAY too many factors that determine the temperature of the actual heat tape itself, and its really of no concern. The cage that the BALL PYTHON is in is all that matters. Whether the heat tape is 90.5 or 150, its of no use if the cage itself doesn't have the proper gradient. I use 80F cool end and 90-92F warm end and have no problems. I'm not entirely sure why you want to know the heat of the tape itself. Seems like an odd question, but I hope you find your answer.
