Young Sulcata with a sofented shell?

tommymx Jan 26, 2005 09:34 AM

I have three leopards and a sulcata. The sulcata was born this past spring, and the leopards were born the spring of '03. The sulcata's shell has yet to harden as much as I thought it would. The little guy eats just fine everyday, with vitamin and calcium supplement. The protein content is less than 9% and fiber is at 18%. I have been unsuccessful at finding any answers from my books or online (all refer to a calcium or dietary defficiency); although I feel that there should not be one with my care.

Enough babeling... I was wondering if anyone else has had this problem, while still giving good care? Or if you have any other solutions?

Thanks in advance, Miles

I believe the number one killer in tortoises under a year is renal failure due to dehydration. The kidney plays a major role in the calcium regulation loop.

The frequency of this type of post has always gone up in the winter and more so toward the end of winter.

I'm guessing that with the added heat there is added dehydration without much thought given to it.

Soak the little guy daily and make sure it has the option of getting into a warm humid area.
