Wheat Bran as substrate...

Chrysemys Jul 05, 2003 08:15 PM

Hey,
I hear lots of people using plain ol wheat bran for their beardies. Think it would be ok for leos? I would think it would be better than sand. What do you guys think?
Thanks,
Chris D.

The only problem with it is that sometimes it gets dusty, but other than that I dont see the problem with it. Maybe somebody else can say more, not too sure on that one, maybe, maybe not.

The whole no impaction thing sounds really nice though!
I would just be worried about mould and the like, I'm not a wheat expert though

Well I dont see why it would get wet in the first place? I think it would be a great replacement instead of sand. We will see if anyone else posts and if not I will repost it.
Thnaks,

Well i just thought of this. I used to read the bearded dragon forum until i got my gecko, but the people there said it attracts alot of bugs and that, so it has its downsides. Besides being dust (which sand sometimes is too) and attracting bugs, its pretty good. I think it would give them the fun of digging and that without the chance of impaction, maybe I'll bother the people on the bearded dragon forum and ask about it being used for smaller reptiles (jk) later

A few of my leos like to somehow upset their water dishes overnight, leaving quite a wet mess.
I think they're trying out for the high dive

I use ceramic pot saucers. I get the glazed ones. The saucer is heavy enough so the Leos cant turn them over or move them around. I also use them for feeding dishes since the mealies cant climb up the glazed ones.
