New janseni!

Katt Jan 26, 2005 12:58 PM

I have acquired this gorgeous, but scarred black janseni. She has survived captivity for well over a year and is slowly healing her mouth. I don't know of any other janseni in Canada, but I sure hope there are some!

I am very excited to have this species and hope I am successful in raising her to adult hood.

Very nice. I really love black janseni. I really wish I had gotten a hold of some cb babies when they produced them at the Denver Zoo! If I remember correctly their female quadruple-clutched!

Katt,
She is very beautiful--such a deep shiny black! Do you know what caused the injury to her mouth? It's hard to see how extensive it is, but does this cause feeding difficulty? From your post I sense that you already love this little snake--she is lucky that you have taken her in. Best of luck to the both of you.

regards,
althea

The injury on the nose I believe is due to nose rub. This snake when she was younger practically rubbed her face off. Over the course of a year (a friend owned her), she has grown and eaten and slowly healed the scarring and infection of her snout. I am afraid of doing anything to her face as she seems to be doing a good job on her own. She has grown from a wee thing to a very long and robust looking animal. I'm going to let her nose be and wait for it to get better. I'm afraid adding stress by messing with her, will cause an infection and we'll be back at square one. It is amazing how much as regenerated.

I hate to say it, but I'm starting to like mine as much as my beloved G. oxycephala. I've got three and hoping for more.

Well I'm not in Canada but do live in South Dakota. I suppose if you're in central Canada it would be possible to drive and meet somewhere. But I'm nowhere close to having any surplus of this form.

Unless you want to put yours up on breeding loan

South Dakota? Are you anywhere near reptile gardens?

>>Are you anywhere near reptile gardens?

I probably live about two miles away from Reptile Gardens. Of course to cover that two miles I'd probably need repelling equipment.

But yes, very close.

I work at the Henry Doorly zoo in Omaha, NE. We just had a couple guys from reptile gardens come down for a tour. I was just wondering if maybe I met you? Guess not.

I was the herpetologist at the Grand Island zoo in the early 90's and have known much of the staff at HDZ. Andrew from the Dome is the only two I really stay in touch with. I've known him since he was a kid, basically. I stayed in touch with both of the Dan's (curators) for many years but have lost touch.

What department are you in? We have probably met.

Actually, I just started up at the dome working reptiles. I moved up here from KY and thought it was interesting that you were so close. I have talked to you a few times about Gonyosoma. Small world. Do you think you will be getting any Gonyo offspring?

Beautiful Snake! If you don't mind me asking, how much did you pay for it?
Thanks,

Katt Feb 20, 2005 04:07 AM

I traded this animal plus a female 1.5 yr old eastern indigo for 1.0 tiger rat, 1.1 burmese python (1 albino, 1 albino patternless), 1.1 proven adult blue beauties, 0.1 yearling albino sonoran.

Not sure how that works out, but I'm thinking she came to around $150 CAD.

OOps!
I meant to say, I received the janseni and the indigo for all six snakes mentioned, not that I traded those two for the six.
