~* Iguana Question *~

girlything10 Jan 26, 2005 02:25 PM

Hey, I had a question about how people can take their full-grown iguanas outside and just set them there on the ground or something. I am under the impression that iguanas are fast.. at least run fast and can climb up a tree or something if they got loose.. well I was just wondering.. When they are full--grown will they be able to enjoy sitting outside without running from you???

My 8 yr. old Ig is too lazy to run from me. He might run if he gets really startled but he most likley would just tilt his head and look towards the sound or whatever. He also doesn't walk more than 3 steps before he stops to shake is head.

I also have an almost 8 year old ig who is lazy.

I know they are tree climbers but had never in the year we've had him, seen Forest actually "climb" so I asumed it was due to inproper diet from previous owners. I even felt bad enough & built him ramps to use to get on/off his chairs, bed, etc.

I'll end this with a picture of where I found Forest one day. He always lays on his chair outside & pretty much never moved like Nutball's ig. I thought due to bad bones. HA! He was just LAZY!

Basically, he just basks & stays put but I watch him VERY carefully now that I know he was just milking it. Forest is too fat & lazy to be fast but I'm asuming little guys can FLY so be careful!

Here is where I found Forest after his little walkabout one day. Mind you, this is my neighbor's 4 foot chain link fence...

I have a very large, full grown male who is 15 yrs old. He has been trained to go outside to go to the bathroom in the summer. He scratches on the back door when he's ready to come in, but most of the time, he lounges on the deck by himself (or with the dog). He's had this routine for the past 10 years, and never has ran away. But I know for a fact that he is quite fast still, because on a rare occasion he runs throughout the house like a madman with the cats I have. I think proper training would allow anyone to let their iguana lounge outside without any fears of escape.
