Green Ig Questions

SpookyScales Jan 26, 2005 04:08 PM

Hello Everyone! I've posted here before (a long time ago), and a lot on the other pethobbyist forums. I'm probably going to be getting a reptile sometime soon (within about 3 months or so) and I've considered the green ig. However, in the past when I looked at them, I persuaded myself not to get one, because of all the "horror stories" that I've heard with green igs involved. I know that without regularly handling/interaction no animal is going to be friendly, but it seems like a lot of igs get aggressive, regardless. I've heard some people say that it doesn't matter whether you do everything in ig care/socialization right or wrong, that your ig still has a high chance of becoming aggressive at breeding season, and I've heard some people say that as long as you do everything right, you shouldn't have an aggressive ig. So, is it true that with proper caging (what is the minimal size for an adut ig...I was thinking 6'Hx4'Dx8'L for one adult ig), proper lighting, proper diet, and enough socialization/handling you ig still has a HIGH chance of becoming aggressive during breeding season?? Can you do anything to prevent your ig from exhibiting aggressive breeding season behaviors (Like use different (longer or shorter) light timing), or anything else?? What have you found to be most effective at getting some of your igs frustration out, and is your ig still handlable at times during breeding season?? Will and ig give a warning before biting/whipping as to whether or not its feeling aggressive or just like being left alone?? Do you think that aside from breeding season time, your ig enjoys human interaction, and likes to be pet/get his head skritched?? Overall, how would you rate you ig as a companion, and have you enjoyed having him/her?? Would you suggest buying Green Iguana Complete Owner's Manual (which edition), or Green Iguanas for Dummies? I think that's it for now. Thanks so much in advance, and I really look forward to reading some responses!! :-D

I'm sorry i cant answer to all of your question but i will try to get some.

Iguana have a very complex body language and from my experience they always give warning before attacking. You just have to learn to read your igg body language.

No matter how much taming and socialization you give to your igg, he can become a monster in breeding season. Especially male. Not all igg became aggressive, i know a lot of people who dont have much problem. Giving them a "sock buddy" and reducing their light period can help.

Igg need a lot of care, i can easily spend one to two hour every day taking care of my igg. In just three month of taming, i can now move around in my house with my igg on my shoulder. I let him free roam a little bit. He's still shy but very tame. I have other reptile but he quickly became the family favorite.
